Digital Agility in the Evolving World of Industry 4.0 and IIoT
Automation, IIoT, machine learning, artificial intelligence and augmented reality – the next decade promises to be the digital revolution of the industrial world. Our challenge is integrating legacy systems and assets with new technologies to harness the explosion of data to drive new opportunities without risking existing operations. This keynote will cover the challenges of the digital revolution and best practices for establishing an enterprise data infrastructure to support your digital transformation as you invest in edge, enterprise and cloud technologies.

Success Stories in IoT

Reducing customer outage time is a cornerstone of DTE Energy's electric reliability and customer satisfaction strategy and the deployment of smart fault indicators throughout the distribution system has become a key component of that strategy. Smart fault indicators (SFIs) allow DTE to quickly detect and locate the source of damaging spikes in current on the grid, caused by things like fallen tree branches or failed equipment. In order to capitalize on the deployment of these SFIs, DTE has decided to leverage the PI System. As an Enterprise Agreement holder, it was a logical choice. This presentation will describe the architecture and processes DTE Energy has developed to gather, store, analyze, and react to SFI data from the field and the types of benefits DTE has seen as a result.

Reducing Overflows of Untreated Stormwater using PI Integrators

With the help of OSIsoft, the PI Integrator for Esri ArcGIS, and the PI Integrator for Business Analytics, the Great Lakes Water Authority (GLWA) has embarked on a path to utilizing near real-time data to empower our organization to make well-informed decisions possible for our member communities and environment. We created an award-winning “Wet Weather Map” that provides mobile access to operators in the field, enabling responsive decision-making. We also partnered with University of Michigan to develop a near-real time model that informs how to improve in-system capacity and operations efficiency including use of our inflatable storage dams and gates. The operational improvements have been estimated to result in significant savings.

CBM: Just Right, Just-in-Time Maintenance
We are being asked to run equipment longer, faster, and harder with less resources while minimizing failures. Condition based maintenance (CBM) takes a data driven approach to maximizing the performance of your assets and maintenance schedules.  Discover how the PI System can be used for CBM through simple drag and drop configuration. Configure digital representations of your assets, calculate key performance indicators (KPIs), and even send notifications or kick off maintenance work flows based on the real condition of your assets.  Jump-starting your CBM project has never been easier with the modern PI System.

Sustainability: Turning Your Energy and Water into Business Savings

Energy and water are significant operational expenses. A 1% decrease can result in huge financial savings, in addition to creating a more sustainable process for the environment. The first step is empowering employees with the right data to make the right decisions.  In this session, you’ll see how you can quickly access disparate data coming from both legacy and new IoT sources to deliver smart, real-time dashboards that drive visibility across the enterprise.  And that monthly compliance report?  PI System allows you to easily refresh reports and be alerted to compliance deviations before they become an issue.

Driving Sustainable Results in Energy Reduction

In this presentation, Kellogg's Battle Creek Plant will present a case study of its HVAC Project. The plant has 44 HVAC units "controlled" by a building management system. The standard operating method in the winter was to heat the air to 80-100 degrees in order to prevent freezing the coils and then cool that same air back down to 50 degrees at discharge. Process air brought into the building by process control systems had no link between the building management and process control systems. Building pressure was basically non-existent and presented food safety risks. In collaboration with a consulting firm, the plant developed and retrofitted the controls with a supportable open source control system, installed building pressure monitors, and tied into process air intakes to balance the building pressure. They also designed a freeze protection system to protect the coils without unnecessary heat waste. With the installation of air flow sensors, they were further able to measure the fresh air intake at each unit. This retrofitting of the plants two processing areas led to savings in excess of $350,000 per year.In 2016, the plant will extend the retrofitting to their packing areas for additional savings."

Analytics: Whether Big Data or Little Data, it's What You Do that Counts

Big data, data lakes, machine learning and artificial intelligence are offering the allure of new insights and answers to efficiencies.  But sometimes the first big win comes from a little improvement using the data your already own.  Learn how you can break down seemingly complex big data problems into a manageable sequence of steps with the PI System.  Even without waiting for completion of a full-blown statistical model, your operational experts can often spot anomalous patterns with little more than a few events captured as PI System event frames and displayed in a report.  And when you are ready to push data to advanced machine learning (ML) tools, the PI Integrator line is available to jump-start your data science initiative with clean, ready-to-consume, reliable data.

System Integration from Connectivity to Operational Insight: Leveraging PI System

Thingworx & Caterpillar’s customers utilize high value, heavy duty assets which are mission critical. To address a goal of eliminating unplanned downtime, combined with goals of working to get to lowest total cost of ownership and assist customers to address compliance issues (internal and external), Caterpillar has developed an end to end system integration from data connectivity to actionable operational leveraging the OSIsoft PI System and Thingworx. Aiming to present an approach to tackle some of these major challenges in two Tiers: Tier 1 - Data Architecture (MIMOSA) and AF, Thingworx Integration Tier 2 - Data Visualization with Data Discovery and Notification Insights
