A review of PSE&G use case and others: Asset Maintenance and Condition Assessment with the PI System at PSE&G
Public Service Electric & Gas (PSE&G) is a New Jersey-based utility company that serves over 2.2 million electric customers and 1.8 million gas customers. In 1994 PSE&G made the front page of regional newspapers when an outage shut down Newark Airport. In response, PSE&G rolled out a centralized computerized maintenance manager program (CMMS) in 2002 that correlated data to the assets within a substation and used algorithms to determine asset health. The program collects data from various sources, correlates the data down to the asset and runs condition based maintenance (CBM) algorithms to determine the poorest performing and troubling assets. Before the present Asset Management CMMS strategy was implemented, most of the substation issues involving gassing and excessive moisture would have resulted in asset failure.
For the past 13 years, the CMMS substation has helped PSE&G avoid asset failure and extend asset life with over $80 million in cost savings to date and expected ongoing annual cost savings of $2-3 million."
